Wedding Wednesday: Getting to the Altar & the Wedding Planning Process! Part One

This is the first part in the next installment of our Wedding Wednesday series! If you missed the proposal story you can click here or you can read last week’s two-for-one extravaganza here: Part One- Fiesta like there’s no Mañana Bachelorette Party & Part Two- How to be a 1950’s Housewife Bridal Shower!

Getting to the altar- Changing venues with just 3 months to go, wedding dress shopping in NYC, & planning a brunch menu is just Part One!

The wedding planning process started quick, I mean really quick, because we already had a girl’s trip to New York City booked for that very next weekend to meet with a wedding dress designer!

I know, I know, I sound like a total crazy person scheduling an appointment with a wedding dress designer and flying to New York City to meet her BEFORE  we were even engaged, but hear me out on this! 🙂

A few months before any of this happened, John and I were out to brunch, discussing fun future things- things like what our wedding would be like and when and the kinds of things that you discuss after 4 years of dating. So I was telling him about this wedding dress company I was in love with but they were based in Europe and there’s no way to buy their dresses here in the US. Because of that, I showed him some photos of their dresses, so he could see why I was in love with their work. As I pulled up their website, it said across the top that they would actually be IN New York City to meet with potential brides in March!! I flipped out!

Naturally, John being amazing John that he is, he instantly was like- you have to go! It’s not a matter of if we’re going to get married but when we’re going to be married and you can’t miss this opportunity! I know, he’s amazing y’all.

So I texted my mom and sister and started looking at flights! I told them I wanted them to be there, of course, but I was going no matter what- by myself if need be!- so book your tickets if you don’t wanna miss out ladies! They were worried I had lost my marbles but John assured them that he was the one encouraging this crazy thought of mine and he didn’t want me to miss out on this opportunity just because we weren’t technically engaged yet.

We booked the trip and planned it all and little-did-I-know my sneaky boyfriend had planned a huge surprise proposal the weekend before it so I would be flying to NYC for wedding dress shopping ENGAGED 😀

Yumm, we discovered a great lunch spot afterwards right next to our hotel

Wedding dress shopping in New York City!

Day three was our last shot at wedding dress shopping in NYC so we were limited on what we could do/go to since we were flying out that evening.

Erin heard about a place that a friend had success at- basically a discount type of store where you pick your own dress out of the racks and then when a dressing room opens up they have assistants there that can help style you and choose other options based on your initial selections. It was pouring down rain and it was in a hard-to-find location so we were frazzled when we arrived but that was nothing compared to the chaos that was inside of the store!

That store was exhausting and a cut-throat type of feeling so we left there ready to get outta dodge!

We went back to the hotel to pack up and we just *had* to finish the rest of the alcohol, you know, so it wouldn’t go to waste 😉

It was much-needed after that store, wowzers!

And this is why I heart Florida

Back in Florida, we had more wedding dress shops lined up the following weekend! After a custom session with the designer herself in a swanky penthouse to a pick-it-yourself discount store, I was eager to try on a REAL wedding dress boutique experience for size!

Wedding dress shopping!

Two appointments, a champagne toast with lunch for luck, and a bajillion dresses later we still didn’t find ‘the dress’ 🙁

So it was onto weekend #3 of wedding dress shopping!

Thankfully, the fifth store ended up being the winner!

So we finally had a dress! And a timeline! Late fall in Florida can be beautiful so we settled on November and started the search for a venue.

We knew we wanted the ceremony to be on the water, or at the least a view of a lake, so that narrowed the pool down considerably.

After calling more places than I can count {shocking at how many venues are booked up two years in advance!} we found a beautiful lakeside spot on the Winter Park Chain of Lakes and chose November 21st as our wedding date 😀

Next up was finding vendors! We started the process by researching obsessively stalking online some of the top wedding planners in the Orlando area.

In the very beginning, wedding planning is actually kinda fun... kinda
In the very beginning, wedding planning is actually kinda fun… kinda

But it was Tracy of Eventfully Yours that was the clear Wedding Planner winner!! She is bubbly, organized, relatable, reliable, trustworthy, and honestly just a joy to be around- everything we could hope for in a wedding planner!

Here’s a perfect example of why Tracy is so awesome: we invited her to tour the rehearsal dinner location of John’s parent’s home and then ride in the boat with us over to the wedding venue spot so we could have a better idea of logistics and to get her opinion on numbers, etc. It just so happened that the day we asked her about was her wedding anniversary! She scheduled the appointment anyway so we insisted that she bring along her two super sweet and polite kids to ride along with us! We kept the tours as short and sweet as we could and I think the kids enjoyed playing assistant for the morning 🙂

Sending Father of the Bride for a newly engaged couple
My sweet cousin and bridesmaid Nicole sent a cute little box of wedding-related goodies for our engagement that I thought was too adorable!

We finalized the color scheme of navy and ivory with a touch of pale pink in the flowers and Groom’s tie!

From Left to Right: Father of the Bride, Groom, Groomsman ties!

Our poor dining room table was always full of contracts to read over, quotes to decide on, notes, and wedding related junk! But I found adding flowers to the table- pink peonies no less!- always seemed to disguise the mess a bit better 🙂 Or I just said that to be able to buy myself flowers for no reason 😉

The ups and downs of wedding planning!

It soon was time for one of our FAVORITE wedding-related appointments- the food!!

The ups and downs of wedding planning!

One of the main reasons we decided to do a brunch-time wedding was specifically for the food. Narrowing down the menu was HARD because Arthur’s had so many amazing, delicious options to choose from.

We started trying on wedding bands, began the fittings for my wedding dress and picking accessories, and found our wedding altar!

On deck now was invites, bridesmaid and flower girl dress shopping, and a curveball- a just three-months-to-go venue change?!?

We met with Megan and Cedar at Paper Goat Post to custom design our invitation suite! Most of the wedding planning appointments were done with me & my mom or me & John but this was a special appointment for all three of us! After looking through books and books of invites ahead of time, we knew what we were looking, but being able to walk into a shop and have someone assure you that you actually CAN make what you want and it WILL be as beautiful as it is in your head- that was an amazing time indeed!

My main request was a navy tree on the top, John’s main request was the shape of the invite itself, and my mom’s was making sure the font was actually legible! We found exactly what were looking for and more! {And to this day I wouldn’t change a thing about our invites!}

We went junior bridesmaid and flower girl shopping with the nieces, my sister in law, mother in law, and mom for some girly-time fun at Bella Bridesmaids in Winter Park! We worked with Christa to help us choose the bridesmaid dresses and knew she would be perfect to help us organize the junior bridesmaids too.

We let the twins each pick which style dress they liked best so if they fell in love with something they wouldn’t have to compromise if they didn’t like the other one’s favorite as much.

The twins left thrilled with their choices and we found a great puffy flower girl dress online for the littles!

As we were finalizing the wording of the wedding invitation, we had one of the craziest situations happen that suddenly presented us with a new {free} venue option…

John’s parents have best friends with a truly stunning piece of property that John has always admired! He actually told me before we even got engaged that it would be his dream to be married on their property, it just has all the pieces of the wedding venue we’ve dreamed about! But after we got engaged, his mom really didn’t want to burden them or put them in an uncomfortable situation where they felt like they couldn’t say no. So we didn’t ask them about their house and we found another venue- ironically, a venue on that very same lake just two properties down!

So fast-forward to a few months before the ceremony, John’s mom casually mentions to a mutual friend of theirs, “you know, John always wanted to get married at the “T’s” house” as part of a conversation they were having before pickleball, not even meaning anything other than making small talk and catching up on the wedding planning process. That mutual friend called the “Ts”, without our knowledge, and told them about our dream of a wedding there and they immediately insisted that we HAD to have our wedding there! The “Ts” called John’s mom and we were honestly just floored that this was even an option, but also that it involved us to possibly move venues just three months before the wedding! AHHHH!!!

Naturally, I freaked out. A.LOT. Haha. But we did what every engaged couple does and freaked out to our wedding planner! What do we do?!? Because of both venues being outside, and us already having a tent booked anyway, and the fact that the home was only two houses away from the other venue, she said we should go for it!

Switching venues 3 months before the wedding, ahhh!! The ups and downs of wedding planning!

So after a long tour of the property of our dreams, we switched our wedding venue completely with less than 90 days to go! :0

After some socializing and food, it was time for presents! Erin was a genius and made a game of the gift opening in a Wedding Present BINGO: Each person filled out their card with what they thought I would be given and then as I opened up the presents, they marked which ones were right! The first one in a row yelled out BINGO. It was such a cute idea and kept people more entertained then just sitting there watching me cry at cards haha.

After I bawled my eyes out thanking everyone for how special they made me feel {I know, typical}, we moved onto the final event of the weekend- Gumball Question & Answers!

John had answered a set of questions my sister emailed to him about our relationship and if I got the answer wrong then I had to put a gumball in my mouth!

Even though my fiance DID answer a lot of the questions incorrectly 😉 it made for even more laughter and fun. My mouth was too full of gumballs to debate much towards the end! It became a hilarious game and I will make sure to post the questionnaire Erin had him fill out here soon for those that may be interested in using the game for themselves.

This 1950’s Housewife Bridal Shower was truly a dream come true and it was the best ending to a once-in-a-lifetime weekend for me!!
