Our Alaska Cruise, Part 1- Ketchikan

Check out the Vancouver section of our trip- Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4– or start at our overall trip outline here

Our East & West ALASKAN CRUISE Part 1 Ketchikan

After taking off from Vancouver, we spent our first day on the ship at sea! The girls checked out the kids club and loved it, we hung out with Eddie and Jamie, and the rest played a whole lot of card games. We discovered all about the happy hour options- what/where/when- which quickly became part of our daily routine for the rest of the trip.

Our East & West ALASKAN CRUISE Part 1 Ketchikan

That night was the first of two formal night dinners of the cruise. It was definitely a mixed bag of attire, from beaded gowns to just sundresses and everything in between.

Our East & West ALASKAN CRUISE Part 1 Ketchikan
John looking dapper and rinsing his fingers all fancy after his crab claw dinner

We all decided to skip the formal portraits and head to the casino instead 🙂 I won like $175 at slots!! We ended up using that money throughout the rest of the trip for more slot machine fun so it was basically free entertainment… basically ha.

Our East & West ALASKAN CRUISE Part 1 Ketchikan

The next morning, June 10th, we arrived at our first port of the cruise- Ketchikan!

Our East & West ALASKAN CRUISE Part 1 Ketchikan

This was our shortest of all the port stays so we were a little more limited on what excursions could be done here, since we figured we only had time for one. However, Ketchikan is RIGHT when you walk off the ship. You can get to the downtown part of Ketchikan that has all the touristy shops/spots/tours in just a few minute walk from the boat.

We really lucked out and had just gorgeous weather on our Ketchikan visit. It was a beautiful sunny day!

Our excursion in Ketchikan was a highly rated ‘duck tour’ through their town and then into the harbor.

Those stairs are actually considered a street and the city will pick up trash and deliver mail by going up and down the stairs. These stair streets were all over Ketchikan.

Overall I would recommend the duck tour- it was fun and informative, everything you want a tour to be! However, I do wish the harbor part was optional or at least a bit shorter. That section took about three times as long as it needed to.

At one point our tour guide even announced, “I’m going to just be silent for the next 15 minutes” because we still had that much longer to go to get back to dry land ha.

DSC02185DSC02192Our East & West ALASKAN CRUISE Part 1- Ketchikan! oureastandwest.com

While on the tour, John and I encountered one of the stranger trip experiences… An older man using the tour as the perfect time to cut his fingernails.

DSC02200

It was SO.WEIRD. you guys!! First off, why was he carrying a nail clipper around with him?? When we were packing up the backpack for our day at port in Alaska, neither of us thought, “let’s bring the nail clippers in case we get some downtime!” Also, do not cut your nails in public people! They were flying off all over the crowd- people who were NOT in a nail salon so they were NOT expecting to have to deflect nail clippings from their face!

DSC02201

It was awkward and strange and absolutely hilarious!

After the tour we walked through the small downtown to check it out and grab some fresh Alaskan seafood for lunch! Our tour guide recommended Annabelle’s with the giant gold crab on top so that’s where we headed.

DSC02207

It was delicious! John had the Bloody Mary oysters and crab cake sandwich, I had the halibut tacos, and we shared a beer flight of Alaskan Brewing Co. beers- which were very drinkable and yummy.

The downtown was as expected. Lots of little souvenir shops and jewelry stores.

DSC02211DSC02213DSC02208DSC02204

There were some unique little sites sprinkled in though…

While we were on our tour, the rest of the family went exploring to see some totem poles!

Our East & West ALASKAN CRUISE Part 1- Ketchikan! oureastandwest.com
From others on the ship we heard that the logging shows were actually a lot of fun so I would probably recommend also checking those options out when choosing your Ketchikan excursion. Also, salmon runs only certain times of the year {I believe late July/early August} so I wouldn’t even look into exploring the hatchery unless you are planning your trip around that time. Otherwise there’s nothing to see at the hatcheries!

Overall we had a nice time in Ketchikan and we finished up by getting ready for John’s birthday the next day!

Our Vancouver Visit, Part 4- Final exploring & Boarding the ship to Alaska!

This is the final part of the Vancouver section of our trip before the cruise through Alaska in our weekly Wanderlust Wednesday series! You can check out my trip overview, Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 of Vancouver here

Our East & West CRUISE THROUGH ALASKA Part 4, Vancouver & Getting on the ship! oureastandwest.com

Everyone was still feeling a bit tired from the FULL day of travel for them/exploring for us the day before so we took the morning a little easy and had a simple continental breakfast at the hotel. We stayed at the Rosedale on Robson

Our East & West CRUISE THROUGH ALASKA Part 4, Vancouver & Getting on the ship! oureastandwest.com
View from our room at Rosedale on Robson

It was a nice place, not in a bad location at all, and lots cheaper than other options closer to Canada Place we looked at online! I believe all the rooms are suites so it was convenient to {finally} have a mini-fridge to use! The hotel sports bar there was a great spot to grab drinks and some food. And as I mentioned in the last post, they have Delirium beer! I think that’s reason enough to check it out  🙂

{Only con of the Rosedale is their continental breakfast is possibly the worst I’ve ever experienced. Seriously. So save the time and effort trying to find it and just grab breakfast at the hotel Sports bar or somewhere around the hotel! Trust me on this one.}

After taking our time getting bags repacked up again, most of our group ventured out to explore Vancouver! Someone mentioned that they really wanted to see Chinatown so that idea quickly won. John and I didn’t care that we were seeing it again, we were only there for a few hours the first time and who knows when we’ll make it back to explore Vancouver again! On the way over, we walked past B.C. Place Stadium to let everyone see that too.

Our East & West CRUISE THROUGH ALASKA Part 4, Vancouver & boarding the ship oureastandwest.com

Unfortunately John’s route, while scenic in some ways, took us along the freeway with a very small barrier between the 10 of us and speeding cars… ha!

Naturally there were some light pokes at him for that but we all made it across in one piece so he was quickly forgiven  🙂

We went back to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Park because it really is just so beautiful and we knew the girls would love trying to find the koi fish in the jade-colored water!

After discovering what Chinese year everyone was born in, we laughed at how accurate some of them were and who was compatible with who. {John is TOTALLY a dog!! I was a Rat, yuck, but pretty on point for me too.} It was great!

We stopped at many a shop {part of being with the three nieces, they looooove to shop!} and found some interesting things along the way. Like a super random coffee/antique/barber store with naked photos of women in the hair cut area…

Our East & West CRUISE THROUGH ALASKA Part 4, Vancouver & Getting on the ship! oureastandwest.com

Though a bit confusing- is it a coffee shop or a barber shop or an antique shop with a plethora of hammers?- it was actually a really cool place and I wanted ALL their globes! John and Eddie just loved that they had a section of drinks titled ‘Fancy Shit’ haha.

It basically just tasted like a weird-flavored taffy. And Remy may be making a face here but she had her fair share, don’t you worry!

We walked back to the hotel- not along a freeway this time ha- and loaded up into a four-cab caravan over to the pier! It was a riot, I wish I had pictures of us and our tons of luggage all piled up.

On our second morning in Vancouver we took it a little easy and slept in a bit- which for our usual East Coast time zone was still before 8 AM! The pub crawl/late night Fireball shots/two full days of walking around caught up to us just a little bit. We packed up our bags and got the apartment ready to go so we just had to come by after sightseeing to grab our stuff.

To start off day two {& a half} in Vancouver, we walked from the apartment to check out Chinatown!

I believe it was $14/person, or thereabouts, and admission includes a guided tour that is done a few times a day. If you are in Chinatown I would definitely recommend the guided tour of the gardens! John and I both found it incredibly interesting, informative, and were amazed at the details put in everylittlething. The tour is only about an hour but we really learned a lot and left with a much greater appreciation of both the gardens and the park- especially compared to if we would’ve had if we just walked through it all on our own.

Our East & West CRUISE THROUGH ALASKA Part 3, Vancouver & Chinatown! oureastandwest.com
Happy hubby!

We went back to the apartment one final time to get our luggage and lock everything up. Even though the hotel was technically in walking distance we took a cab over. It was just waaaay too complicated to do with two rollerboards each plus a backpack each plus navigating a very busy city sidewalk of people. {We debated on walking over back and forth at length but after 30 seconds on the street with all our stuff John changed his tune ha and we quickly looked for a cab to flag down.}

We checked into the hotel and found a cozy spot at the hotel bar while we waited for our family to finally arrive from Florida!

The rest of the family miraculously had the same easy flight experience as us- if you can even believe it- and arrived on time and all in one 10-person-piece! AND all the luggage made it too! Quite the miracle.

We all enjoyed a drink at the hotel bar together, caught up everyone on our Vancouver experience thus far, and made a tentative plan for the next day. {This is when Eddie and Jamie introduced us to Delirium beer for the first time, now an all-time favorite beer!!}

Part of the group decided they were going to call it a night and recover from the long day of travel, while the rest of us walked down to the port for dinner and to check out the cruise ships! John met our AirBNB host to give back the key on our way over since we were passing his workplace anyway, it worked out great. We went to dinner somewhere right by Canada Place so the girls got to see the ships and everyone was so excited to finally get the cruise underway after planning it for so many months!

On the way home from dinner we stopped in a liquor store and bought a bottle of wine for each bag to take onto the ship along with some cigars for the guys. John took a risk and bought a small bottle of Scotch to try to sneak into his bag instead of wine, to go with the cigars of course 🙂

After getting back to the hotel, John, his brother Eddie, and I all hung out at the hotel bar for another round or two of drinks since it was still pretty early in Vancouver time. One of the sports bar TVs was playing a show called‘Diving- Behind the Scenes’ or something along those lines so we laughed {too much} and chatted about Eddie and John’s past experiences diving themselves.

And just like that, the Three Mouseketeer/Nightowl Crew for most of the cruise trip was created!

We arrived in Vancouver mid-afternoon Sunday, June 5th. We flew from Orlando through Chicago and took a taxi from the airport into Vancouver. {Bonus to United Airlines for all of the flights being on time AND all of our bags arriving with us in good condition!!!}

We met the AirBNB host at a coffee shop to pick up the keys and show us to the apartment.

We decided to stay in a studio while it was just us to try AirBNB for the first time! We also wanted to have the use of a fridge & stove and to be in the part of the city where people actually live versus just a touristy section- we knew we’d see a lot of touristy places in the cruise ports. It did end up that the apartment’s refrigerator and freezer were actually broken haha so that part didn’t work so well but the rest of it was exactly what we were looking for.

The place was really nice and located riiiight on the edge of Gastown. Right where a dodgy/interesting section of town began, so we had a very unique ‘market’ on the sidewalk in front of us.

Our Amazing Family Cruise to Alaska!

Our East & West CRUISE THROUGH ALASKA oureastandwest.com

Our trip to Vancouver and cruise through Alaska was truly a trip-of-a-lifetime! I can’t recommend it enough, and for all age groups. We had 12 family members in our party. From our nieces (ages 7 & 10), to me & John, John’s brother & sister-in-law (the 30-something crowd), to John’s mom & two aunts, and our sister-in-law’s parents (ages ‘they’d definitely kill me if I said anything specific’ so let’s just say they are all retired and end it there ha)- there really was something for everyone on this trip!

oureastandwest.com
After embarking from Vancouver, Canada

John and I went early to Vancouver and kicked off the trip just us. {We happened to have our annual family reunion vacation already booked with my family when this Alaska cruise came about so we had two family vacations back-to-back and we knew we’d need some just us time to reconnect between it all.} We arrived in Vancouver Sunday afternoon and stayed until our cruise departed on Wednesday. The rest of the crew met us in Vancouver Tuesday afternoon so they also got to see a bit of the city too before we left for Alaska.

oureastandwest.com

The seven day cruise stopped at three ports, Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, concluding in Whittier, Alaska. We took Princess Cruise’s Island Princess ship. This was my first cruise so I don’t have anything personally to compare it to as far as other cruises go but will try my best to give you some comparisons/feedback based on our family’s comments along with my initial cruise experience thoughts.

Every week for the next three months will be ‘Wanderlust Wednesday’ as I breakdown the cruise in multiple posts so I can give each port and section of the trip it’s own proper spotlight- cause it really deserves it! If there’s anything I don’t cover specifically you have questions on, feel-free to comment or ask me 🙂

I’ll be back next Wednesday to discuss our Vancouver visit first!
